Day 235 – Is the Pope Catholic?

Friday, November 6, 2020 –

You know the old “joke:” Is the Pope Catholic? Well, ya know…in this particularly trying time of world mess, it does not help to have a Pope saying off-the-cuff stuff in old documentary footage. BUUUTTT, this is the Pope we got.

Anyhoo, I find it comforting to occasionally pull up the list of Popes, deposed popes, anti-popes, and opposed…uh…guys just to remind myself that we’ve had worse. Sure, we have had better, but there are some real doozies in our long history of Catholicism. However, the most important thing is that we—ahem, Catholics—have outlasted 2,000 years of people doing what they do best: screwing up!

God the Father sent His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ, to save us from our sins. The Second Person of the Holy Trinity was well within His rights and powers as God to set up His Church in whatever fashion He chose, and He chose fallible humans. So, however much we want to scratch our heads and say, “well, that’s not how I would do things,” remember that we are not God, and we cannot possibly understand His ineffable love and plan for us.

So here you go, the list of Popes and guys and stuff:

NB: this list does not officially contain “Pope” Michael, the Oklahoma native elected by his mother in July 1990 and who currently resides his papacy in Kansas.
