Day 227 – Mrs. Flusche’s Super Basic Primer on the Rosary (Part VIII)

Thursday, October 29, 2020 –

We are nearing the end of the month dedicated to the Holy Rosary. Today I want to make sure I cover when to pray which sets of mysteries. I also want to wax poetic (or just make a list) of some of the mysteries I would put forward if anyone ever asked me to be in charge of that sort of thing.

First up: which mysteries are prayed on which days (traditional schedule vs. added Luminous Mysteries)? Spoiler alert: you can honestly pray any set on any day. There is literally nobody policing this! But, if you are set on being part of the “in” crowd, here is the traditional schedule as well as the updated schedule to accommodate the Luminous Mysteries:

NB: there is ALWAYS disagreement about which Mysteries to pray on Sundays depending if you are in Lent or Christmas or whatnot. Just roll with it. Again…literally…NOBODY…policing…this!!! Seriously, the Swiss guard will not come confiscate your Rosary if you only pray the Sorrowful Mysteries. Promise!

Traditional Schedule (sans Luminous):

  • Sunday:
    • In Advent, Christmas, and Time After Epiphany: The Joyful Mysteries
    • In Septuagesima and Lent: The Sorrowful Mysteries
    • In Easter and Time After Pentecost: The Glorious Mysteries
  • Monday: The Joyful Mysteries
  • Tuesday: The Sorrowful Mysteries
  • Wednesday: The Glorious Mysteries
  • Thursday: The Joyful Mysteries
  • Friday: The Sorrowful Mysteries
  • Saturday: The Glorious Mysteries (unless you prefer the Joyful Mysteries or Sundays are changed or the sky is purple or…NOBODY POLICING THIS!)

New Schedule (now with more Luminous!):

  • Sunday:
    • In Advent, Christmas: The Joyful Mysteries
    • In Lent: The Sorrowful Mysteries
    • In Easter and Ordinary Time: The Glorious Mysteries
  • Monday: The Joyful Mysteries
  • Tuesday: The Sorrowful Mysteries
  • Wednesday: The Glorious Mysteries
  • Thursday: The Luminous Mysteries
  • Friday: The Sorrowful Mysteries
  • Saturday: The Joyful Mysteries

And then there is the Mr. Flusche bizarre schedule of what the Fatima!?

  • Sunday: The Glorious Mysteries (he does not change for the seasons)
  • Monday: The Sorrowful Mysteries
  • Tuesday: The Joyful Mysteries
  • Wednesday: The Glorious Mysteries
  • Thursday: The Luminous Mysteries
  • Friday: The Sorrowful Mysteries
  • Saturday: The Joyful Mysteries

And now for something lighter. If Mrs. Flusche is ever consulted about making a new set of mysteries for the Rosary, here is what I would suggest:

The “Rebuking” Mysteries

  • Christ makes a whip out of cords and throws people out of the temple (John 2:15)
  • The Cursing of the Fig Tree (Mark 11:12-25)
  • Christ calls the Pharisees “hypocrites and fools”
  • Or pick any of the times Christ casts out devils and rebukes them (pigs flying off a cliff, people!!)
  • The Harrowing of Hell (Apostle’s Creed)

Or, perhaps all three times Christ raised someone from the dead (but that would be a shorty set unless we can find two other undead peeps):

  • The Naim Widow’s son (Luke 7:11-16)
  • Jarius’s Daughter (Luke 8:49–56)
  • Lazarus (John 11:1-44)

Queen of peace, pray for us!
