Day 30 – A Random Advent Story for the Octave of Easter

Wednesday, April 15, 2020 –

Andrew and I are putting in a small vegetable garden. We are neither handy or outdoorsy, but that is a post and (maybe) a series of videos for another time.

Anyhow, while building our raised bed, a nice lady came walking past our property. She was thrilled we were out and stopped to ask a few questions, from an acceptable social distance of course.

After telling her about our lawn bot—yes, Andrew has a lawn bot—she began asking about “that giant lawn wreath [we] put out every year.” For the record, our outdoor Advent wreath is about 5 feet in diameter with 4-1/2 foot candles. It is pretty noticeable from space.

“I’ve been meaning to come knock on your door for years, but I didn’t want to seem nosy. What is the big wreath for? It’s so beautiful! But, why are there four posts for and why don’t they match?”

Smiling, I told her we were Catholic, and the wreath is an Advent wreath. So many wonderful questions were asked. For a good while we chatted about the purpose for Advent, what the wreath and candles meant, why one is rose, why they get lit up one at a time, etc. She asked more about our Church and Catholicism, and we had a lovely conversation about all that too.

I really loved being able to cheerfully spread the faith! I told her to stop by any time she had a question, and I hope she really does.

You never know when someone is ready to hear about Catholicism, but take the time to stop and spread the Good News…even if you are covered in dirt, tired, and sweaty from building a not-quite-right vegetable garden.

Saint Charles Borromeo, pray for us!
