Given the state of the Union…ahem, world…perhaps we should spend a few days covering the THREE EMINENT GOOD WORKS. They aren’t just a Lenten “thing.” Rather, it would be amazing for all of us to lean into them a little harder throughout the rest of the year. These three things are our weapons! They shore up our bodies and souls against the onslaughts of the devil. They prepare our mind and body to fight against worldly things.
Indeed, many a soul was won by the incessant prayer of a grandma and her rosary, not to mention the souls won by the myriad of Saints and Priests who denied the earthly pleasures for the sake of the Kingdom!
The Three Eminent Good Works are:
- Prayer
- Fasting
- Almsgiving
For those of you who want them listed in Latin:
- Oratio
- Jejunium
- Eleemosyna
And finally, for those who seek a graphic representation, I have TWO! For the basic one, you will have to settle for one in Latin because #LatinIsALanguage!

Side note: the fourth word “abstinentia” means “abstinence.” AKA no meat on Friday stuff.
And for the not so basic version, here is a lovely rendering from My Book of the Church’s Year by Enid M. Chadwick.

Saint Agatha, pray for us!
